A good way to save is by purchasing a used tractor.  Professional farming tractors are extremely expensive new.  And most of the big companies that build them like John Deere design tractors that will last a long while under vicious farming conditions.  This is the reason why getting used tractors are extremely cheap as you are getting quality at a reasonable price.  Those trying to find tractors typically look at the local classifieds for used tractors for sale where there’s usually a limited supply.

Now on the net there are many places to get great deals from auction sites to dealers selling used tractors to individual owners.  Be careful to inquire as to what the costs are such as shipping.  These can truly add up.  Particularly concealed fees!

The best bet is to discover a used tractor for sale within driving distance of your farm or property.  When inspecting tractors check to see if there had been a written maintenance record kept.  A good tractor technician can aid in determining how well the tractor has been maintained.  It’d pay to get a local tractor engineer to check the unit before purchase.  Check for any axle leaking which may be suggestive of a future substantial repair.

When deciding on a model get one with a wide front end because older antique models with a narrow front have a tendency to roll more which is hazardous.

For Diesel Tractors seeing stack smoke could be a signal that the fuel injectors are clogged and the possibility that the rings and washers need to be replaced.  This should be indicated in the final cost.

Inquire as to what kind of fuel additions have been used to manage stack smoke so you know how the tractor will perform with different fuel mixtures.

One of the benefits to searching for antique tractors is that not only do they perform standard tractor functions they are also highly valued collector items.  As of late huge rare tractors from the 30’s, 40’s, and 50’s have been purchased by speculators in Europe and shipped abroad.  Their values are climbing gradually like rare art work.  Some tractors fetch 100k- 200k.
